How to Negotiate Your Salary as a Helper in Thailand

ThaiHelper Team6 min read

Many helpers in Thailand accept the first offer without negotiating. But knowing how to talk about money can mean thousands of baht more per month — and a better working relationship overall.

Know Your Market Value

Before any salary discussion, research what others charge:

  • Housekeeper (full-time): 12,000 – 18,000 THB/month
  • Nanny (full-time): 15,000 – 25,000 THB/month
  • Private cook: 15,000 – 22,000 THB/month
  • Driver: 15,000 – 20,000 THB/month

Bangkok and Phuket pay more. English-speaking helpers earn 20-40% above average. Experience and strong references from previous families also increase your value.

When to Negotiate

  • During the first interview — Don't wait until you've started working to discuss pay.
  • After a successful trial period — If the family loves your work, this is the best time to discuss a raise.
  • After 6-12 months — If your responsibilities have grown, your pay should too.
  • When you gain new skills — Got a first aid certificate? Learned to cook Western food? These add value.

How to Ask — The Right Way

  1. Be confident, not aggressive. Say: "Based on my experience and the responsibilities of this position, I believe [amount] is fair."
  2. Focus on value. Instead of "I need more money," try: "I speak English, have 4 years of nanny experience, and can also help with cooking — I'd like this reflected in the salary."
  3. Be open to benefits. If the family can't raise the salary, ask about transportation allowance, meals, or an annual bonus.
  4. Put it in writing. Once you agree, have a simple written agreement with salary, schedule, duties, and rest days.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't compare yourself to other helpers in front of the employer
  • Don't threaten to leave — negotiate in good faith
  • Don't accept verbal promises for "future raises" without a timeline
  • Don't undersell yourself because you're afraid of losing the offer

Your Profile = Your Leverage

Families pay more for helpers with detailed profiles, strong references from previous employers, and clear evidence of experience. The better your ThaiHelper profile (photo, full work history, skills, languages), the more bargaining power you have. Invest time in your profile — it pays off literally.
